Directions

1 I am aware that people often use landmarks as a reference for directions.
2 I am aware that roads in cities are typically narrow and speed bumps (topes, rompemuelles, bolardos) are very common.
3 I am aware that highways are often shorter and smaller and access to rural areas is often limited.

Weather

1 I am aware that seasons vary by country and region, due to differences in latitude and geography.  For example, seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are opposite those of the Northern Hemisphere, due to the Earth’s tilt.
2 I am aware that people pay less attention to the weather forecast in Latin America because weather patterns, with the exception of hurricanes in some areas, are rather predictable.
3 In Hispanic countries, the Celsius temperature system is used.
4 I am aware that weather changes very little throughout the year in Latin American countries close to the Equator.

Time

1 I am aware that for informal situations meeting times are simply approximations, and the event may happen later.  (La hora latina)
2 I am aware that guests are not supposed to arrive on time for celebrations in private homes.
3 I am aware that you do not want to be the first to arrive and the last to leave.
4 I am aware that for formal situations punctuality is important. (classes, events, doctors’ appointments, business meetings).
5 I am aware that for informal situations an analog time format is used. However, younger generations are using the digital format more.
6 I am aware that for formal situations and entertainment events the military time format is used.

Cities

1 I am aware that cities/towns are typically more densely populated with smaller or no yards, and that living in an apartment rather than a single-family home is very common.
2 I am aware that in Latin America, people from the countryside migrate to cities.
3 I am aware that cities/towns were built around a main plaza or zócalo, typically surrounded by the main buildings of governmental, economic and religious authority.
4 I am aware that cities, especially the capital cities, are large and many times overpopulated.
5 I am aware that in large cities the levels of contamination and crime may be high.

Housing

1 I am aware that in general children live with their parents until they marry.
2 I am aware that it is common and normal to live, work and study in or near one’s hometown.
3 I am aware that Hispanics prefer to live close to downtown because most activity happens there; therefore, many people live in apartments.
4 I am aware that Hispanics with low income live in “suburbios” neighborhoods far from downtown.
5 I am aware that many Spanish speakers emigrate to other countries in search of labor opportunities.
6 I am aware that most people live only with their immediate family, that is, parents and children.
7 I am aware that in most Spanish-speaking countries the first floor is referred to as “la planta baja” while the second floor is referred to as “el primer piso.”
